The Advanced Body Sculpting Institute
was founded by John Millard, MD in September 2005 on the knowledge,
foresight and fortuity that liposculpture training was an undiscovered
opportunity in its current state.
Although liposuction is currently the number one
performed surgical procedure in the United States, it is based primarily
on an increasing demand for the procudure by those seeking a thinner
body versus any technological advancements and guarantees of ultimate
success. Over the past thirty years, fundamentally both the technique
and the technology have not had any significant changes.
It is the mission of the Advanced Body Sculpting
Institute to capitalize on any new advances in liposculpture technology
and create as much change in the industry as in each potential body
form. The latest advancements in ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty
and laser lipoplasty technology are included in our courses.
“Why
limit oneself to “sucking out fat” and simply reducing
the size of the deformity when it is possible to sculpt and rebuild
a body section, as when
working with marble.”

The Discovery of VASER®
- Assisted High Definition Liposculpture (VAHDL)

Alfredo Hoyos, MD |
In the mind of most plastic surgeons, liposuction
is a non-creative, non-artistic, mundane procedure that requires
little skill and training. This is due to the limitations that traditional
liposuction imposes when one confines themselves to deep fat removal
only.
With the combination of technology, surgical skill,
artistry, and the understanding of human anatomy, the real definition
of liposculpture can be realized. One innovative, young plastic
surgeon from Bogota, Columbia did realize this combination and has
perfected the art form of VASER - Assisted High Definition
Liposculpture (VAHDL). This sculptor is Alfredo
Hoyos MD.
“A
sculptor in front of a block of stone can visualize shapes, volumes,
and profiles, and then shaves the material until the harmony of
the imagined body appears….in this way we remove little by
little what our eye ‘sees” and our hand “feels”
with out worrying about being too superficial.”

Introduction of the Fundamentals of Body
Sculpting Course
In the April 15th 2004 edition of Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery, a practice advisory was issued
by ASPS Committee on Patient Safety. This advisory, titled “Practice
Advisory on Liposuction” was created to provide surgeons
interested in performing liposuction with a strategy to follow for
patient management, appropriate clinical decision making, and training
requirements. It is the most rigid and complete set of guidelines
published with regard to lipoplasty safety.
Based on the training recommendations set for
by this advisory, the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute developed
the Fundamentals of Body Sculpting course. It was designed
on the commitment to meet or exceed the recommendations of the advisory
panel. This course is a prerequisite to attending the VASER-Assisted
High Definition LipoSculpture (VAHDL) course for those just beginning
lipoplasty in their practice.
The operating surgeon must meet all of the minimal
requirements:
| |
1) Must be an M.D. or D.O.
2) Must be qualified or certified by a surgical
board recognized by the ABMS, and
3) Complete an 8-hour liposuction/body contouring
training course approved for category 1 CME credits with at
least 3 hours of hands-on bio skills cadaver training and
a comprehensive instructional program on fluid replacement.
4) Surgeons performing procedures outside
of the area of training must obtain additional education,
certification, and experience AND operate in the area of anatomic
expertise.
5) A physician should have the primary responsibility
of providing/supervising anesthesia. |
The Advanced Body Sculpting Institute follows
all of the above recommendations or exceeds them. For example:
- The courses provide extensive "Hands-on"
opportunities on a live patient, not exceeding a 4:1 surgeon to
trainee learning ratio.
- The course provides all for attending physicians
with temporary malpractice insurance for LipoSelection.
- The courses are taught by board certified plastic
surgeons with many years of experience in liposuction.
- The courses follows Colorado state medical
board guidelines for out of state physicians during hands-on training
of liposuction.
- Preceptor training is offered.
- Up to 21 Category One CME credits are
provided.
Development of the Care of the Body Sculpting
Patient Course
After the first few Fundamentals of
Body Sculpting Courses took place, a high demand was created
to train the adjunct staff crucial to the success of adding body
sculpting to a practice. This course, running simultaneously with
the surgeons’ course, is invaluable for quickly and efficiently
adopting body sculpting procedures to your practice. Converting
your practice to an aesthetics practice takes more than just a new
procedure learned. Prepare your staff with the tools needed to make
you successful in this new adjunct to your practice.
